GUARDIAN AD LITEM
As a CIP volunteer Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) in the juvenile and probate
courts you would work closely with the volunteer coordinator who shares
responsibility with you on cases. Most of your time will be devoted to
meeting with the child(ren), parents, social workers, foster parents
and the therapists who are involved in the case. Once you have
completed your initial assessments, you will make a report of your
observations and make recommendations to the presiding court. Since
most of the appointments can be arranged around your own schedule, it
is possible to be a volunteer and be employed on a full time basis.
There is a mandatory five-day training.
MONITOR
As a CIP volunteer Monitor you would be responsible for monitoring case
progress. This involves telephone follow up with social workers, foster
parents, counselors, schools, parent aide programs and other human
service providers to assess the degree of compliance with court
expectations set by the judge. Training is only one day. Monitors are
available in each court as needed and are currently only used in the
New Britain, New Haven, and Willimantic courts.
